How to register for UK VAT: EAS step-by-step guide

Registering for UK VAT yourself is not as daunting task as you might think with EAS by your side

Full step-by-step guide here

You can easily register for UK VAT at https://www.tax.service.gov.uk/register-for-vat/

The registration form takes approximately 15 minutes to fill out.

Please note:

HRMC suggest communicating by email despite obvious security challenges regarding the data and documents shared. It is up to you, but our suggestion is to accept this for speedy and streamlined processes.

To accept the communication channel, you must email us at the email address at the top of HMRC letter from "Online Selling Compliance Team", registration.onlineselling@hmrc.gov.uk. Please include the VAT Acknowledgement reference number shown on HMRC email in the subject heading. Your email must tell HMRC that you understand and accept the risks of communicating by email.

You need one of the following documents:

  • A Passport
  • A photo drivers license
  • A national identity card

You need two of the following documents, for example:

  • A mortgage statement
  • A lease or rental agreement
  • A work permit or Visa (if in UK)
  • Any correspondence from the Department of Work and Pensions confirming entailment to benefits (if in UK)
  • A recent utility bill
  • A birth certificate

Elaboration on few questions:

"Will the business trade VAT-taxable goods with countries outside the UK?"

- If you intend to deliver goods from UK to EU, "YES"

- If you only intend to sell in UK, "NO"

"Do you need an EORI number?"

In reality EORI number is only required if you participate in customs process and 99% do not and even that 1% should not. BUT: some logistics companies insist on you having the EORI number.

Getting one is free, so you might as well get it if you answered "Yes" to the previous one.
